Biomass production – possibilities for northern latitudes

On 13 May 1981, a Canadian group of students and other forestry people visited Hyytiälä Forestry Field Station, University of Helsinki. I was invited there to give a review of the thot topics of those times, below
Kanadalainen opiskelijoiden ja muiden metsäalan henkilöiden joukko vieraili Helsingin yliopiston Hyytiälän metsäasemalla. Sain kutsun tulla pitämään vieraille alustus silloin ajankohtaisesta aiheesta "Biomassan tuotanto - pohjoisten leveysasteiden mahdollisuuksia".

Biomass production – possibilities for northern latitudes

1. On renewable energy sources

The excess of solar energy exists throughout the world. The developing countries have the greatest potential, but the industrialized world itself is not lacking opportunities either. Even the most densely populated countries with a high standard of living, such as the Netherlands or the United Kingdom, consume energy which is equivalent to no more than 1-2 per cent of the energy received from the sun. Evidently, a lack of solar energy would not limit activities aimed at utilizing solar radiation. This is also the case in such northern countries like Finland, even in the latitudes beyond the arctic circle.
